Patient files from the Saint-Jean-de-Dieu Asylum sometimes contain letters from parents, priests, or doctors detailing the many concerns by a person\u2019s deviant behaviour. The letters highlight how difficult it was for families to constantly supervise a loved one suffering from insanity. The mentally ill behaved in disturbing, exasperating, and sometimes shocking ways. Family members felt like they were living through a never-ending storm. That is how insanity was described at the time.<\/p>\n

SA MAJEST\u00c9, par et de l\u2019avis et du consentement de la L\u00e9gislature du Qu\u00e9bec, d\u00e9cr\u00e8te qui suit:<\/p>\n

\u00ab 3. Ne seront admis ou d\u00e9tenus dans les asiles subventionn\u00e9s par la province, aux frais du gouvernement, que les ali\u00e9n\u00e9s qui n\u2019auront pas par eux-m\u00eames, ou par quelques parents oblig\u00e9s par la loi \u00e0 les soutenir, les moyens de payer en tout ou en partie, leur pension, dans un asile d\u2019ali\u00e9n\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

\u00ab 5. Pour faire admettre un ali\u00e9n\u00e9 dans l\u2019un des asiles de la province, aux frais du gouvernement, il faudra qu\u2019un parent, un ami ou un protecteur du malade, en fasse la demande, par lettre adress\u00e9e au secr\u00e9taire provincial.<\/p>\n

6. Telle demande sera accompagn\u00e9e de trois certificats faits respectivement, suivant les formules A, B et C de la c\u00e9dule 1, du pr\u00e9sent acte.<\/p>\n

1) La formule A, sera sign\u00e9e par trois citoyens du lieu de la r\u00e9sidence du malade.<\/p>\n

2) La formule B, sera sign\u00e9e par un m\u00e9decin, constatant l\u2019\u00e9tat mental du malade.<\/p>\n

3) La formule C, sera sign\u00e9e par le maire et le secr\u00e9taire-tr\u00e9sorier de la municipalit\u00e9 du lieu o\u00f9 r\u00e9side le malade; et il y sera certifi\u00e9 que le malade est une personne qui doit \u00eatre intern\u00e9e dans un asile d\u2019ali\u00e9n\u00e9s, et si elles poss\u00e8de elle-m\u00eame ou si les personnes sont oblig\u00e9es par la loi \u00e0 son entretien et \u00e0 sa subsistance, poss\u00e8dent des biens suffisants pour payer en tout ou en partie, ses frais de pension et d\u2019entretien dans le dit asile. \u00bb<\/p>\n
